Dental Care
Pets, like people, need regular dental care. Studies have shown that greater than 85% of dogs and cats over 3 years of age have some form of dental and/or gum disease. Some breeds can also be more pre-disposed to early periodontal disease.
Dental disease can not only have an impact on their breath, but it can also cause systemic disease such as infections or heart disease.
Dental disease in cats and dogs can be prevented or prolonged with routine dental cleanings (both professional and at home brushing of teeth), regular examinations, and a healthy diet. All of these can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life and extend their longevity.
Things that you as a pet owner can do at home to help:
Dental procedures are offered at Main Street Animal Hospital. Pets undergo general anesthesia and are given a full COHAT (comprehensive oral health exam and treatment). This includes: full mouth radiographs, oral mapping and measurements, extractions if required, scaling of tartar and calculus as well as polishing.
For pets that have extensive periodontal disease or with other underlying health issues where we have concerns regarding anesthesia, we may recommend referring to a dental specialist for your pet's dental procedure.
If you have an questions regarding dental health or if you are interested in scheduling a dental cleaning please give our office a call to discuss with a member of the veterinary team!
